New BMW Shopper FAQs

FAQs for New BMW Shoppers

Almost everything people want to know before buying a BMW comes down to three things: which model actually fits the life you have, how the money works, and what ownership costs once the first year is behind you. Below are the ten questions our sales team gets asked most, answered the way we would answer them across a desk.

Several surprise people. The 2026 X5 has no third row — the X7 is BMW’s only three-row SUV — so if you are weighing an X3 against an X5 for a family, the real question is cargo rather than seats. BMW placed fifth overall in Consumer Reports’ 2026 reliability rankings and was the only European brand in the top ten. And because Indiana taxes a vehicle after the trade-in allowance comes off, with no cap on the trade value, trading a car in is worth more here than most shoppers assume.

Which BMW is better for a family of four, the X3 or the X5?

Either one seats your family. Neither has a third row, so pick on cargo and price.

The 2026 X5 does not offer a third row. BMW dropped that option after the 2023 model year, and the X7 is now the only BMW SUV with three rows.

Cargo is the real dividing line. The X3 holds 31.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 67.1 with them folded. The X5 holds 33.9 and 72.3. Call it 8 percent more everyday space and 8 percent more maximum space. If your weekly load is groceries and hockey gear, the X3 handles it easily. Packing four people plus luggage for a week? The X5 earns the difference.

xDrive all-wheel drive is standard on both 2026 X3 trims, while the least expensive X5 — the sDrive40i — is rear-wheel drive. For a Lake County winter most buyers want all-wheel drive, so the honest apples-to-apples pair is the X3 30 xDrive against the X5 xDrive40i rather than against the sDrive. Compare those two and the decision gets a lot clearer.

Should I lease or finance a BMW in 2026?

Over exactly three years, a lease is usually the lower cash outlay. Financing wins when you plan to keep the car well past the last payment.

The mechanism is residual value. Residual value is what BMW Financial Services projects your vehicle will be worth at the end of the term, and a lease payment covers the gap between the price today and that number rather than the whole car. A strong residual means a lower payment on the identical vehicle, which is why leasing is often the more efficient way into a BMW than a loan on the same car. A loan pays for all of it, and that only pays you back if you keep driving the car for years after the final payment.

The upfront cost people forget is the acquisition fee. BMW Financial Services charges $925 to originate a lease, and no dealer can waive or reduce it. Weigh it against a loan origination fee rather than treating it as a surprise at signing.

One local wrinkle worth knowing before you compare quotes. Indiana taxes a lease on each monthly payment rather than on the full vehicle price up front. Illinois handles leases differently. Live in Lansing or Calumet City and shop in Schererville, and the same car on the same term will not produce the same monthly number as it does for your neighbor in Dyer.

Apply for Financing

What happens at the end of my BMW lease?

You have three choices: turn the vehicle in, buy it at the purchase option price, or apply any equity toward your next BMW. Which one is right depends on a number you have had since the day you signed.

That number is the purchase option price, and it’s disclosed in your lease contract at signing. Compare it against what your car is worth at turn-in today. If the vehicle is worth more than the buyout, that difference is equity and it belongs to you — but only if you buy the car or roll the difference into the next one. Hand the keys back and it goes to the bank instead.

The costs at the end are defined in advance rather than open-ended. Excess mileage runs $0.25 per mile beyond your allowance, and most current BMW lease programs run 39 months with 32,500 miles, a shade over 10,000 a year. Already know you drive 15,000? Buying the extra miles up front costs less than settling up at turn-in. There is also a disposition fee of up to $495 when you return a vehicle, and BMW Financial Services waives it if you lease or buy another BMW.

Before turn-in the car gets a wear-and-tear inspection, either at an authorized BMW Center or by a BMW Financial Services representative. Normal use is expected and is not chargeable. Curbed wheels, cracked glass, and tires below the minimum tread are the items that usually generate a bill, and each one is cheaper to sort out beforehand than to be invoiced for afterward. Start the conversation about 90 days out and there is still time to do something about it.

What BMW can I get for $700 to $900 per month?

This window generally covers the X1 and X3 comfortably on a lease and reaches into the X5 depending on term and down payment. Anyone who quotes you a payment without five specific inputs is guessing.

The five are the exact vehicle and its options, your credit tier, the term, the annual mileage, and the cash you put down. Change one and the payment moves by more than most shoppers expect.

Financing the same vehicle over 60 months runs meaningfully higher per month than leasing it, because you’re buying the whole car instead of part of it. That’s not an argument for leasing. It’s an argument for comparing a lease payment against a loan payment on the same specific vehicle rather than against a number you saw in an advertisement.

Should I trade my car in or sell it privately?

A private sale can bring a higher gross number, but the comparison most people run is incomplete. Once the sales-tax credit is on the same line, trading is often the better net.

Here’s the arithmetic. Indiana charges a flat 7 percent, calculated after the trade-in allowance comes off, with no cap on the trade value. On a $60,000 BMW with a $25,000 trade, you are taxed on $35,000 rather than $60,000, so the trade saves $1,750 in tax by itself. Illinois removed its $10,000 trade-in credit cap under Public Act 102-0353, so Illinois buyers get full credit too, against a 6.25 percent state rate plus local tax.

So a private buyer offering $1,500 more than the trade number is not really paying you $1,500 more. On that Indiana example you’d be behind by $250 before you had listed anything. Then add the parts that never make it into the comparison: weeks of listing and messaging, strangers at your house, the payoff and title work, and continued liability for a car you no longer drive.

Run it both ways rather than assuming. Bring us the best private offer you have, and we will appraise your car and set both numbers side by side with the tax credit included.

Which BMW is the most reliable with the lowest maintenance costs in 2026?

BMW placed fifth overall in Consumer Reports’ 2026 reliability rankings, the only European brand in the top ten, and every BMW model scored average or better for predicted reliability. Within the lineup, models built around the 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline-six are the most proven current mechanical package.

That ranking is worth reading closely, because it is not a marketing claim. Consumer Reports builds it from owner surveys covering roughly 380,000 vehicles, and BMW finished ahead of Audi, Volvo, Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz, with the next European brand nearly ten places below. The BMW 2 Series was the highest-scoring European model in the survey. J.D. Power reached the same conclusion among the three German luxury brands.

The number to plan around is not a repair estimate. It is 36,000 miles. Ultimate Care covers scheduled maintenance to that point on every new BMW, so the first three years are budgeted for you. What most owners don’t plan for is the step up afterward, when wear items like brake pads and rotors come due for the first time.

BMW built two programs for exactly that, and they stack. Ultimate Care+ can be added before 60 months or 60,000 miles and covers brake pads, discs, and wiper blade inserts. BMW Value Service pricing becomes available once a vehicle reaches 37 months. Pick which one you want before year three rather than after.

Which BMW is best for Midwest winters?

The X3 is the practical answer: xDrive is standard on both 2026 trims, and it has 8.5 inches of ground clearance. But the tires matter more than the drivetrain.

xDrive is BMW’s all-wheel-drive system, and it splits torque toward the rear axle by default before sending power forward when a wheel starts to slip. It’s genuinely good at getting a car moving on an unplowed side street off US 41. What it doesn’t do is shorten stopping distance, and no all-wheel-drive system from any brand does. A winter tire on a rear-wheel-drive 3 Series will out-brake an all-season tire on an xDrive X5 every time.

The distinction is worth real money here. Lake-effect snow coming off Lake Michigan puts down accumulation across Lake and Porter counties that the rest of the state never sees, and I-80/94 is not where you want to discover the difference between traction and grip.

One more thing that catches new BMW owners: M Sport and M models often ship on summer performance tires, and summer compounds harden below roughly 45 degrees. That’s not a snow problem. It’s a cold-pavement problem, and it starts in November. Buy an M Sport package in the fall and plan on a second set of wheels with winter tires. Our parts department stocks them and can store your summer set.

Which BMW dealer has the largest inventory near me?

For Northwest Indiana, we’re the closest BMW Center by a wide margin. Which dealer has the largest inventory changes weekly, and it’s the wrong thing to shop on anyway.

What matters is whether a dealer has your configuration. A store with 400 units and none in your color and package is worse for you than a store with 200 that has exactly one. Search by the options you actually want rather than by unit count, and include in-transit vehicles in the search. Those are units already built and allocated, usually several weeks out, and they are frequently the fastest path to a specific build.

If nothing on the ground matches, a factory order lets you spec the car exactly and often arrives sooner than people expect. On the X5 it’s worth a conversation before you order, because BMW revealed the next-generation X5 on 30 June 2026, with U.S. deliveries expected late 2026 into early 2027. Depending on your timing, one or the other is clearly the right car, and we would rather tell you which than sell you the wrong one.

Our new inventory, in-transit units, and build-your-own tool are all on this site, and drivers from Crown Point, Merrillville, Valparaiso, and Chesterton reach us on US 30 or US 41 in well under an hour.

How does the BMW maintenance program work, and what is covered?

BMW Ultimate Care is the scheduled-maintenance program included with every new BMW, and it runs 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. Knowing where its edges are is what keeps a service visit from becoming a surprise.

Covered: engine oil and filter changes, brake fluid service, spark plugs, cabin and engine air filters, and the vehicle checks BMW specifies. Not covered: brake pads, brake rotors, wiper blades, tires, wheels, wheel alignment, the battery, fluid top-offs, and fuel. Those are classified as wear items, and how fast they wear is down to how a car gets driven rather than to the car itself.

Services are not on a fixed calendar. Condition Based Service is the system BMW uses to decide when your car needs attention, using sensors and actual driving data rather than a mileage table, and the car reports itself through BMW TeleService. So two identical X3s bought the same week can reach their first oil service months apart, and neither one is wrong.

Two things run alongside Ultimate Care and are easy to confuse with it. The New Vehicle Limited Warranty covers defects for 4 years or 50,000 miles. BMW Roadside Assistance runs 4 years with unlimited miles. Neither is maintenance, and both outlast the maintenance program.

Should I buy a gas, plug-in hybrid, or all-electric BMW?

Home charging is the deciding factor. Charge at home and do most of your driving inside a plug-in hybrid’s electric range, and the plug-in is excellent. Charge at home and rarely exceed an EV’s range, and electric is the better buy. Where home charging is not realistic yet, gasoline is still the right answer, and BMW builds a very good one.

The federal math changed. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act ended both the $7,500 new-EV credit and the $4,000 used-EV credit for vehicles acquired after 30 September 2025. Nothing bought in 2026 qualifies, so an EV now earns its place on fuel and maintenance rather than on a credit.

On the plug-in side, the X5 xDrive50e delivers up to 38 miles of electric range, which covers a Munster-to-Merrillville commute without burning any gasoline, and the engine is there for the weekend without a range conversation. The battery costs a little cargo room — 33.0 cubic feet behind the rear seats against 33.9 in the xDrive40i.

On the electric side, the new iX3 50 xDrive is rated by BMW at 383 to 434 miles depending on wheel and tire choice, with U.S. deliveries beginning in fall 2026. Read that spread carefully: the 434-mile figure comes with the 20-inch summer tire package. On the standard 20-inch all-seasons the number is 383, still among the longest ranges of any electric vehicle sold here. Cold weather takes a further bite out of any EV range figure, which is worth knowing before you buy rather than after.
