The Volvo XC60 can’t compete with the X5 with its base 295-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. Even opting for Volvo’s range-topping 455-horsepower powertrain leaves a wide gap between the XC90 and the X5 M60i and X5 M.
The Audi Q7 struggles to match the BMW X5 at almost every level. Its base 261-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder and 335-horsepower 3.0-liter V6 engine are over 100 horsepower behind the respective X5 powertrains. Jumping into the performance-oriented SQ7 only bumps the output to 500 horsepower, putting it well behind the X5 M and 23 horsepower behind the X5 M60i.
The Genesis GV80 comes close to the X5 with its base 300-horsepower 2.5-liter turbocharged engine. However, its lineup-topping 3.5-liter twin-turbo engine delivers just 375 horsepower, falling well behind the top-of-the-line X5 models.
The Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class struggles in performance against the X5, from its 255-horsepower base engine to its 603-horsepower AMG 63 S variant.
There’s no denying that the Volvo XC90 is a great-looking SUV, but its design is all class and no sport. If you’re looking for a nice dose of sportiness without going overboard, the X5 is the better option.
Audi has always stood firm on its timeless designs, which age well. However, the Q7 falls flat with a relatively vanilla design. The BMW X5 balances sporty and classy while still retaining BMW’s timeless design cues.
Genesis is a relative newcomer in the luxury SUV space and is still getting its footing in design. The GV80 stands out in a crowd, but its huge grille and split headlights and taillights don’t exude class.
The Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class is an elegant SUV. However, its softer body lines and rounded edges lack the aggressiveness the X5’s more defined body lines deliver.
The Volvo XC90 comes standard with a well-designed 9-inch infotainment touchscreen backed by the Google Android operating system. It’s a fine setup but is significantly smaller than the X5’s and has developed a reputation for being a little slow to respond to inputs.
The Audi Q7 starts solidly with its standard 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, rivaling the BMW X5. However, it falls flat with its standard 10.1-inch infotainment display.
The GV80 looks great with its massive panoramic display screen encompassing the digital gauge cluster and infotainment screen. However, that massive, continuous screen may distract some drivers.
The Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class also starts rock solid with its standard 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, giving the BMW X5 some competition. However, its standard infotainment screen is also 12.3 inches, which is far smaller than the X5’s screen.
